LAS VEGAS (AP) — At the inaugural Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, music and entertainment have taken a dominant role. (The luxury club and casino is a founding partner in the Las Vegas Grand Prix.) Travis Scott performed at Zouk Nightclub located in Resorts World Las Vegas, another partner of this particular race. For the inaugural Vegas race weekend, the Grand Prix hosted an Opening Ceremony — not too dissimilar from the star-studded event that launch the Miami race in 2022. WeWork was famous for huge coworking spaces with amenities like climbing walls and swimming pools. "Lots of companies, WeWork included, made decisions that spiked revenue in the short run, but probably weren't prudent in the long run," he added. Your Money Needs to Go on a Vacation

Illustration: Jarred BriggsA record number of Americans have been planning a foreign vacation. They should take their stock portfolios along with them. Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

So-called girl math is not the only trend spurred by users on the short-form video app TikTok. "Dupes," short for "duplicate," are cheaper alternatives to premium or luxury consumer products, and they are increasingly popular among Gen Z and millennial shoppers and app users. While nearly one-third of adults, 31%, have intentionally purchased a dupe of a premium product at some point, Gen Z and millennials have higher participation rates: roughly 49% and 44%, respectively, according to Morning Consult. "The online culture of dupe shopping, accelerated by TikTok especially in the last few years, has flipped the script," said Ellyn Briggs, brands analyst at Morning Consult. While shoppers may miss out on the experience luxury products provide, dupes are less expensive versions that help consumers save money and test an item before splurging on the real thing.

CNN —At first glance, the American actor and filmmaker Fisher Stevens wasn’t the obvious choice to helm the four-part Netflix documentary series about English soccer great David Beckham. “When they first called me, my response was …’why me for David Beckham?’” the 59-year-old said to CNN Sport’s Don Riddell. “I said, ‘Hey, I have a call with David Beckham, but I’m not sure,’” Fisher fondly recalled. I say what’s really strong, their relationship is really strong and if you can work with your wife and it works, God bless, man,” he said. But that’s why he’s also such a good guy, because he’s worried about you too.”A second series?

Some 57% of Gen Zers said they would like to become an influencer if given the chance, according to a new report from Morning Consult, a decision intelligence company. Put another way, more than half of Gen Zers "believe people can easily make a career in influencing," she adds. The Morning Consult data comes from one survey of 2,204 U.S. adults and one survey of Gen Zers ages 13 to 26 who use Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, or YouTube. Most Gen Zers think it's easy to make a career in influencingSome 53% of Gen Zers believe becoming an influencer is a reputable career choice, and a similar share would quit their current jobs if they could become an influencer if it was enough to pay for their lifestyle. 1 thing driving Gen Z's interest in influencing as a career is the ability to make money, followed closely by being able to work flexibly and doing fun work.

Like, wait, did he not travel to Atlanta?” added Trivedi, referring to Atlanta United’s Major League Soccer (MLS) game against Inter Miami on Saturday. “I feel bad,” Galdamez told CNN. Sixteen years on, six MLS teams (over 20%) have artificial turf in their home grounds, including Atlanta United’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where Inter Miami will play on Saturday with potentially Lionel Messi featuring. “Truth is it’s been a while since I’ve played on artificial turf, but I have no problem adapting myself again,” said Messi. The science is conflicting as to whether artificial turf presents increased health concerns to those playing on it. Lower-extremity injuries, in particular knee and ankle injuries, more commonly occur on artificial turf in comparison to natural grass.”Lower leg injuries suffered on artificial turf aren’t just an issue for NFL players. Some 66% of U.S. workers say companies should adopt extended vacation policies, like a month off in August, in their workplaces, according to a Morning Consult survey of 1,047 U.S. adults. Several countries offer even more by law before paid public holidays come into play, which can add up to more than a month of business days in vacation time per year. But not all U.S. workers say they'd welcome longer vacation policies: 21% of Americans say companies should not adopt extended PTO policies in their workplace, while the remaining respondents say they don't know or don't have an opinion. The survey didn't specifically address the concerns of those against extended time off work, says Ellyn Briggs, brands analyst at Morning Consult. Global experiments to test a four-day workweek have gotten workers, and their bosses, onboard with the idea. It's worth noting the Morning Consult survey defined a four-day workweek as working four days a week for 10-plus hours a day. There are surprising generational differences at play: 93% of millennials and 88% of Gen Xers lead the way in being interested in a shorter workweek. Baby boomers, meanwhile, show the least amount of interest (72%) in a shorter week. Workers say they most want the benefit to improve their commute, work-life balance and to avoid discomfort working in an office.

Cadaver dogs are in Maui to help find the deceased
  + stars: | 2023-08-14 | by ( Zoe Sottile | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
As Maui officials continue searching through the wreckage for the many who are still missing after wildfires tore through the island, they have a new tool at hand: human remains detection dogs, often called cadaver dogs. Human remains detection dogs are one of several kinds of working dogs trained to detect scents, like bomb or drug detection dogs. Search dogs are often dogs with a working heritage, like border collies or German shepherds. Lynne Engelbert, a human remains detection dog handler and teacher, told CNN the job requires a specific canine personality. Lisa Briggs, a forensic criminologist who specializes in the use of human remains detection dogs, told CNN not all human remains detection dogs have the same skills – and the dogs in Maui would need to be imprinted specifically on burnt remains in order to search effectively.

The 45-year-old man from the Gold Coast has been in police custody since August 2022, when he was initially charged with making child exploitation material and using a carriage service to distribute it. “This is one of the most horrific cases of alleged child abuse our detectives have seen,” Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald with the New South Wales police said in a news conference. Other charges include hundreds of counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 years, counts of making child exploitation material and other charges related to possessing, producing, distributing or obtaining child exploitation material. The AFP said it is working with international authorities to help identify four children recorded in the alleged child abuse material overseas.

Now, companies like Form Energy, AtmosZero and a Silicon Valley-based startup called Antora Energy are tackling the challenge with more affordable battery technology. "Because of that we're able to store energy at much lower costs." Christina Karapataki of Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which was founded by Bill Gates, says this business could be particularly lucrative. There are now about a dozen thermal energy storage companies using sand, rock, brick or other types of ceramic to store energy as heat. Along with funding from Breakthrough energy, Antora is also backed by Chris Sacca's Lowercarbon Capital, Shell Ventures, BHP Ventures, Grok Ventures and Trust Ventures.

[1/3] FILE PHOTO-A Porsche 911 Carrera S is on display during the 75 years Porsche sports car exhibition "Driven by Dreams" in Berlin, Germany, January 25, 2023. The automaker will electrify its compact SUV Macan, followed by the 718 sports car and then the best-selling Cayenne, Porsche e-fuels team leader Karl Dums said. Porsche's EV plans and e-fuels investment are separate, he said. Major automakers will likely avoid new e-fuel models after 2035, having already committed $1.2 trillion to electrification. A host of smaller carmakers also want to sell luxury, high-performance e-fuel models to customers rich enough to afford the expensive fuel, which today can cost up to 10 pounds ($12.90) per liter.

China's Politburo meeting this week could see more stimulus announced, though investors have so far been underwhelmed by Beijing's actions. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures were little changed ahead of a wave of earnings this week. The U.S. dollar eased a touch to 141.37 yen , having jumped 1.3% on Friday following the report on the BOJ. The rise in the dollar pulled gold back to $1,961 an ounce and away from last week's peak of $1,987. Oil prices ran into profit-taking early on Monday having climbed for four straight weeks amid tightening supplies.

Unlike the U.S., where home buyers can snag a 30-year mortgage, Canadian borrowers must renew their mortgages every five years at the prevailing interest rates. MORTGAGE DELINQUENCIES LOWLatest data released during the quarterly earnings showed mortgage delinquencies for all banks were low. Of the big six banks in Canada, Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.TO) and National Bank of Canada (NA.TO) do not offer mortgage extensions, meaning the payment owed by the consumer goes up for each hike the BoC announces. Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO), CIBC (CM.TO) and TD Bank (TD.TO) each allow for negative amortization as rates rise. So it is working counter to what the Bank of Canada is trying to accomplish," Briggs added.

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - Companies around the globe took on a record $456 billion of net new debt in 2022/23, although higher interest rates should reduce appetite for new borrowing ahead, Janus Henderson said in a report published on Wednesday. The net new debt taken on in 2022/23 pushed outstanding net debt up by 6.2% on a constant-currency basis to $7.80 trillion, surpassing a previous peak in 2020/21, at the height of the COVID pandemic, Janus Henderson's annual corporate debt index showed. One fifth of the net-debt increase reflected companies such as Alphabet and Meta (META.O), which owns Facebook and Instagram, spending some of their "vast cash mountains", Janus Henderson said. Higher interest rates were also expected to dampen appetite for further corporate borrowing and Janus Henderson said it expected net debt to decline by 1.9% in 2023/2024, falling to $7.65 trillion on a constant-currency basis. "The increase in interest rates will feed through into the weaker cohort of credit quality much quicker than in investment grade (bonds)," Briggs said.
